Economist Gilberto José Nogueira Jr., Gil do Vigor from BBB 21 (GShow / Divulgation)
THE Big Brother Brasil 2021 can now be called “iconic”. Even generating anger and sadness in the public, the program has broken audience records (27 points in the IBOPE average, the highest number in eight years), raising questions about the impact of this atmosphere on the sponsoring brands. Amid all this hype, one participant surprised when he took the economic debate into the house: the economist Gilberto José Nogueira Jr, from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) – now better known by his nickname, Gil do Vigor.

The academic side of the brother who dances tchaqui tchaqui began to attract attention in the last days, when he explained to Juliette, in a very informal and didactic way, what is the Phillips Curve – the economic theory that describes the direct relationship between unemployment and inflation.
“Many times people say ‘when I am President, I will issue currency at the Central Bank and give money to everyone! Everyone is rich! But then I started studying and saw that uiiiiii [não é bem assim]”said Gil, automatically switching to Economy Minister Paulo Guedes’ chair – at least on Twitter memes.

Gil’s taste for the economy has existed since very early. Still in elementary school, around the 6th grade, the future economist won an Honorable Mention at the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad. A few years later, already in high school, Gil was again recognized with another Honorable Mention, at the same time as he started to work as a waiter assistant.
It didn’t take long and Gil left his apron to become an administrative assistant at an insurance broker – where he used to arrive early so he could study for the entrance exam. Reconciling work with school took away the boy’s sleep, but his mother’s encouragement spoke louder and he managed to be the first of his family to attend higher education,
During his graduation in Economic Sciences at Federal do Pernambuco, which was from 2011 to 2016, Gil monitored the discipline of microeconomics and concluded the course by analyzing “the Convergence of Income between the Municipalities of the State of Pernambuco between 1999 and 2012 “. Convinced of his academic vocation, Gil passed the master’s degree at UFPE and won a scholarship from CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel).
Guided by a professor specialized in contract theory, political economy, and industrial organization, Gil spent three years studying the relationship between drug resale and violence. According to his thesis, in this context, violence is as strategic for the success of sales as the definitions of quantity and price, impacting the total level of violence, the prices of drugs, the quantities traded and the well-being of those involved. As soon as he completed his master’s degree, Gil continued his academic career and started his doctorate, also at UFPE. His dream, however, is to study abroad, and complete his doctorate at a university abroad. According to the Extra newspaper, paying for academic life abroad is one of Gil’s plans if he wins the R $ 1.5 million prize at BBB.
But little does he know that good news awaits him out here. This week, Jacira Santana, Gil’s mother, took to Twitter to announce that her son had passed the University of Texas, in the United States.
A week later, more good news. Also on Twitter, Gil’s advisor in the master’s and doctorate announced that he was accepted into the California PhD – and on a scholarship! “It’s not just an excellent PhD, it’s what was at the top of his list of preferences! “, Said professor Rafael Costa Lima.” And he who does not invent to give up! “
These past 11 months have been very difficult.
So I’m going to get a ride and celebrate my students’ success. @gilnogueiraofc was accepted into the PhD at the University of California, Davis, on a scholarship !!

According to UOL, in a conversation inside the house, Gil told Sarah that the research of his doctoral thesis should address the legislation for the LGBT population and the neglect of states with crime against this minority – relating, once again, their experiences and violence with the economy.
Regarding the short term, Gil recently revealed that, if he is a leader, he asked the production that the theme of his party is precisely the economy. “At the party, I put on the economy. I still put on like that, I wanted numbers, everybody’s clothes numbered, a lot of numbers out there, and food with numbers,” he said to friends Sarah and Juliette.
We look forward to this party, Gil!
