Secret Truths, currently in rerun, is one of Globo’s biggest hits in recent times. The plot marked the career of author Walcyr Carrasco and became a reference for other productions from the eleventh strip, so much so that it will gain a sequel. Despite this, the serial had problems in its trajectory, from an embezzlement in the cast to a fight between the authors.

Deborah Secco would live Carolina
Originally, Deborah Secco was cast to play Carolina, the mother of Angel (Camila Queiroz). The actress even recorded scenes like the character at São Paulo Fashion Week alongside Rodrigo Lombardi, who played Alex in the plot. However, just before the soap opera opened, Deborah discovered that she was pregnant.
Due to this, she had to leave the cast, being replaced by Drica Moraes. All scenes recorded by Deborah had to be discarded and redone — as the team no longer had Fashion Week available, they had to improvise with stage shows.
Alessandra Ambrosio in Secret Truths
The telenovela also received a stab within the artistic milieu due to the presence of model Alessandra Ambrosio. The top appeared in the series as Samia, who had an affair with Alex. However, her performance was criticized by Mariana Xavier, known for her work in the trilogy of films Minha Mãe É uma Peça and in the soap opera A Força do Querer (2017).
“I get to die every time I see a non-actress in a place that would fit an actress. Mainly a good place like Secret Truths. I messed with the hornet, I know. But I really pity so many good actresses chasing opportunity that is wasted by people without talent for that,” wrote Mariana on her Twitter.
Later, in an interview with columnist Bruno Astuto, from Época magazine, Alessandra rebutted the complaints. “It is normal to be criticized. But I see that today these barriers are decreasing: several models are going to TV”, she said.
Camila Queiroz in Secret Truths
The fashion world has also revolted against some aspects of history. Marcus Panthera, owner of Mega Model agency and former model, detonated the representation of the pink book — a system in which models act as call girls. For him, the plot reinforced misconceptions about the medium.
“The soap opera creates stereotypes that only harm agencies and testify against serious professionals — both businessmen and models. We fight to end this idiotic stereotype, which only exists in Brazil, in fact, that male models are always gay, and that the models are always whores. Here comes this rogue [Walcyr Carrasco] confront us with these absurdities,” he shot UOL columnist Ricardo Feltrin.
Also to the journalist, Globo responded to the critics: “Novels are works of fiction without a commitment to reality, as noted at the end of each chapter. By freely recreating situations that can occur in real life, dramaturgy seeks only to weave the background for their stories, never with the intention of offending any professional category”.
author against author
Perhaps the deepest discord caused by Secret Truths occurred after its end. Walcyr Carrasco wrote the chapters with Maria Elisa Berredo as co-author. O TV news reported at the time that, according to top Globo sources, it was crucial to the success of the telenovela, giving the plot a heavier tone and including themes such as sex and drugs.
She continued alongside Carrasco in Êta Mundo Bom! (2016), following the author’s series. However, shortly after the debut, the two fought and broke up the partnership. Behind the scenes, it was said that the writer would have been bothered by the prominence Maria Elisa was receiving.

Originally aired in 2015, Verdades Secretas returned to the air on Globo in a kind of “warm up” for its second part, which will continue the plot starring Camila Queiroz seven years later.
The re-presentation of the saga written by Walcyr Carrasco is also an attempt to stop the audience from escaping to the new season of A Fazenda, reality by Record.
