Less than two months after leaving the position of director of international relations at São Paulo, Diego Lugano already has a new job. The Uruguayan was announced as a reinforcement to the team of commentators from ESPN and Fox Sports, Disney sports channels. The debut of the former quarterback of Tricolor paulista in the function happens on Friday (5), in Resenha ESPN.

The program will be hosted by Loco Abreu, Lugano’s compatriot. Presented by André Plihal, the attraction will also feature the participation of Djalminha and Silas. In addition to the presence on ESPN’s journalistic programs, the new commentator for the Disney channels will be the team’s name in the Libertadores matches at Fox Sports.

“I always liked to face challenges and leave the comfort zone to start new trips through unknown waters. I face another challenge within football, this time in front of the cameras. Bring my experiences, experiences, and place my positions”, projects the Uruguayan.

Captain of Uruguay in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups and champion of the Copa America in 2011, Lugano is the athlete who most used the captain’s armband in the history of the Uruguayan national team. He landed in Brazil in 2003 to make history in São Paulo by being champion of Paulista, Libertadores and the 2005 World Cup, in addition to the 2006 Brazilian Championship.

After his success at the São Paulo club, he was transferred to Europe, where he worked at Fenerbahçe (Turkey), Paris Saint-Germain (France), Málaga (Spain) and West Bromwich (England). In 2017, Lugano ended his career as a player after returning to São Paulo, a club where he also worked as a manager between 2018 and January 2021, when he left the position.

The former defender is now 40 years old and will be the first time he has worked for a television channel. “One of the reasons for accepting the invitation and that it is a broadcaster that represents me, that has no controversy for controversy, that respects everyone involved in the world of football and especially the viewer. I come with a light head and soul,” he says.

After posting on Instagram with the hiring announcement, Lugano received messages from colleagues at the new company. “You are sure to rock here, Luga! Experience and forcefulness are some of your assets. In addition to the ability to surprise. Be very welcome. The house is yours,” wrote presenter André Plihal.
