Novice series surpasses Chicago franchise and This Is Us among the most viewed in the US

Bigger surprise of the 2020-2021 season, the debutant The Equalizer, starring Queen Latifah and remake of the success of the 1980s, consolidated itself among the most watched series in the United States, beating favorites like the Chicago and FBI franchise. The newcomer was second only to NCIS, which remains at the top of the North American preference.

With an average of 11.78 million viewers, The Equalizer began its journey on the CBS network as a highlight. Its first episode was shown right after the Super Bowl, the largest showcase of American TV, and registered no less than 20.4 million live viewers.

The index achieved after the football final was the highest recorded by a non-sports or political program since last year’s Oscars ceremony on February 9, 2020.

In the following weeks, The Equalizer dropped a little, but it still got good numbers. With the positive result, a second season has already been ordered.

The NCIS drama continues to be the most viewed even after 18 years on air. Among all the attractions of American TV, it only lost to the NFL games (the football league) shown on Sunday and Thursday night by the networks NBC and Fox, respectively.

FBI dropped from second to third place, averaging 10.97 million viewers. The top 5 also features Chicago Fire, the most viewed among the franchise’s sisters, and Blue Bloods, which is heading towards its 12th year.

Adults prefer dramas to cry

Among the adult audience (between 18 and 49 years old), the most important metrics of TV audience in the USA, the preference continues for more sensitive dramas. This Is Us and Grey’s Anatomy are respectively in first and second position, the same as last season.

The Equalizer comes in third, consolidating its prominence again in 2021. It left behind the police drama 911, which fell to fourth place. Fifth is another newcomer: Law & Order: Organized Crime, an SVU spin-off that brought back the protagonist Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni).

The debut of Organized Crime also paid off for Law & Order: SVU, which in its 22nd season managed to return to the list of the most watched in the adult range and figured in ninth place.
