Old-fashioned sitcom, with episodes no more than 30 minutes in length and background laughs for jokes that are sometimes not so funny, Pit Stop was launched on Netflix this month. Despite being original to the streaming service, the production starring Kevin James had everything to be successful on TV, on broadcasters such as SBT or the Comedy Central channel.

The style of the series leaves that “I have seen it somewhere” feeling. The plot is focused on the story of friends who have worked together for years and live as a family. They share the difficulties of taking orders from a novice and executioner boss, in addition to always having the same bar as a place for meetings and outbursts.

In other words, the setting is very similar with phenomena such as Friends (1994-2004) and The Office (2005-2013). The jokes, on the other hand, are light and “family”, so much so that the rating is for people over 10 years old.

If it were a TV production, Pit Stop could be shown by SBT in a time slot that enshrined series like Me, The Boss and The Children (2001-2005), As Visões da Raven (2003-2007) and, more recently, Henry Danger (2014-2020) and The Thundermans (2013-2018).

The Netflix sitcom cast is headed by an actor known in Brazil for comedy films. Kevin James stars in features that are popular here in the country, such as Hitch – Conselheiro Amoroso (2005), Segurança de Shopping (2009), Gente Grande (2010) and Professor Peso Pesado (2012).

But he was raised to success with a comedy series in the same footsteps as Pit Stop, The King of Queens (1998-2007), which earned him an Emmy nomination in 2006.

The actor also signs the executive production of a new Netflix series, which has creator Jeff Lowell, one of the writers for Two and a Half Men (2003-2015) and The Ranch (2016-2020).

In the plot, James plays Kevin Gibson, Nascar’s team boss Bobby Spencer Racing. He faces problems when the owner of the company decides to retire and passes the job over to his daughter, young Catherine (Jillian Mueller).

Initially, she tries to modernize the business, recruiting several newbies and other tech-savvy young people. But the renowned Kevin, who was a pilot, looks down on innovations and resists. Conflicts become more acute when Catherine expresses her desire to fire pilot Jake (Freddie Stroma) and add inexperienced Jessie (Paris Berelc) to the team.

Different perspectives create conflicts. The series explores themes such as machismo, friend zone, when one person falls in love with the other, but the second person does not have the same feeling), bullying and resistance to change. The first season of Pit Stop has 10 episodes, and a renewal has not yet been announced. Watch the trailer below:
