After confirming the purchase of the broadcasting rights for the Champions League, SBT is negotiating for the exhibition of another competition organized by UEFA: the Europa League. The championship, which has matches on Thursdays, is the second most important club tournament of the European entity and is equivalent to what the South American Cup represents for clubs in South America.
This is another step in the proximity that Silvio Santos established with UEFA. In early April, according to the TV News he anticipated, the station’s owner was at the forefront of negotiations with the entity and the Team agency, responsible for the sale of rights, and won the dispute with Globo for the rights of the Champions League.
SBT will broadcast the Europa League games in the next three editions of the tournament, from 2021/2022 to 2023/2024. The information was brought forward by the website Máquina do Esporte. As the contract has not yet been signed, the company has not yet confirmed the deal.
Silvio Santos’ broadcaster will show one match per round starting from the group stage, which starts on September 16. In other words, in a few weeks, the SBT grid will have three straight days of football in the late afternoon, with Champions duels on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Europa League on Thursday.
The tournament has been out of open TV since 2012, when it stopped being shown by RedeTV !. Over the past nine seasons, competition broadcasts have taken turns between Fox Sports and ESPN – Disney has renewed the deal with the Europa League and will also continue showing the championship until at least 2024.
The Europa League brings together the teams that failed to qualify for the Champions League. In the semifinals of the current season, for example, are Manchester United, Roma, Villareal and Arsenal.
In 2020, Silvio Santos’ broadcaster reinforced its sports programming with the acquisition of the broadcasting rights of Libertadores da América, with which it obtained good ratings, and the resurgence of Arena SBT, a program in the round table format about football presented by Benjamin Back. This year, SBT should also show the Copa America on open TV.
