Olivia Colman, responsible for playing Queen Elizabeth in the third and fourth seasons of The Crown, is in talks to join the cast of Empire of Light, the next film by director Sam Mendes after the success of 1917 (2020). If the agreement is made official, it will be the first time that the two will work together.
Searchlight Pictures, the studio behind Nomadland (2021), is developing the project based on a script also written by Mendes. In the feature, he will work again with Roger Deakins, cinematographer who won the Oscar for best photography in 1917.
Empire of Light is situated in the 1980s and will tell a love story involving an old cinema located on the south coast of England. So far, Olivia has been the only actress to be linked to the cast of the new feature.
The project arrives with great expectations after 1917 having collected ten Oscar 2020 nominations and raised US $ 384 million (R $ 2.1 billion) at the box office worldwide.
If confirmed in Empire of Light, Olivia will revive the partnership with Searchlight after A Favorita (2018), a film that won her the Oscar for best actress. This year, the star of The Crown is again nominated for an award for his work on My Father (2021).
