The 24-year-old FC Alverca player, who had had a cardiac arrest during a game, passed away this Thursday, the club confirmed.
In the statement shared on social networks, FC Alverca communicates, “with deep regret, according to the information provided by the medical staff of Vila Franca de Xira Hospital, the death from brain death of the athlete Alex Sandro dos Santos Apolinário, this morning ”.
In the same note, the club states that “it will provide all the necessary support to family members” of the Brazilian footballer and that, “in this moment of mourning, all FC Alverca’s activities are canceled”.
The 24-year-old went down on the pitch in the 27th minute of the game between Alverca and Almeirim for the Portuguese Championship last Sunday. He was assisted in the field, having suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and was in the hospital in serious condition and in an induced coma.
According to the website Sapo Esporte, the player arrived in Portuguese football in 2018/2019 to play for Alverca, after representing Cruzeiro and Atlético Paranaense in Brazil.
