In his farewell, the Argentine coach thanked the fans, the mining board and said that the club ‘is destined to fight for great things’
The end of Brazilian championship next Thursday, 25, will also mark the end of the Jorge Sampaoli fur Atlético-MG. This Monday, 22, through a letter, the coach announced his departure from the club. He had a contract until the end of 2021. Atlético-MG faces the Palm Trees in the last round, at 9:30 pm, at Mineirão, but Sampaoli will not be able to be on the bench, as he was expelled last Sunday, in the 3-2 victory over Sport, in Ilha do Retiro, a result that ensured the team’s classification in the group stage of the Liberators cup. The team will be led by Jorge Desio, his technical assistant. With the Argentine’s departure, the mining board will have to find a replacement quickly, since on Sunday he will be committed to the 2021 season, his debut in the Mineiro Championship against a URT.
Sampaoli has not revealed what his destiny will be, but he is the favorite to take charge of Olympique de Marseille, from France, which recently defined the departure of the Portuguese André Villas-Boas. If this is confirmed, he will return to European football after two experiences in Brazil – Santos in 2019, being runner-up Brazilian – and the passage by the Argentine selection. Announced by Atlético-MG in March, Sampaoli led the team to the state title, but failed to seek the national title, despite the high investments made by the club, dropping production in the second round, especially in away games. So far, he has led the team in 44 games, with 25 wins, 9 draws and 10 losses. He even started talks to expand the contract until 2022, but he opted for the break.
Check out, in full, Sampaoli’s farewell letter from Atlético-MG:
“2020 was a tough year for humanity. We have to be creative and we wanted to build a team that, when it was on TV, would forget the sadness for a moment. We did not set out to simply win: we tried to be happy. There was not a single day at Atlético Mineiro in which we abandoned our idea of football. This team had the courage to play in and out of the house in the same way. We never gave up thinking about the rival’s post. The Rooster put his heart across the country. It gives me impressive pride. I want it to be an ideology that stays with the club. Brazilian football has infinite talent and made me rediscover the beauty of the game, something that will mark me forever.
The end has come. On Thursday, it will be the last match. I leave with the nostalgia of not being able to drive with the stadium full. I know we are very moved. I wanted to live the videos I had seen of a cheering supporter. I want to thank the whole club. To the players, for the delivery. To all the employees of the institution, for putting their soul into this project. To the managers, for giving us great conditions to work. To the city, for treating us so well. The Rooster is destined to fight for great things. I know the victories will come. I love you very much and wish you to continue walking with your heart as a guide.
Jorge Luis Sampaoli “
