The Eagles coach suggested that a meeting be held between the coaches of the I League to try to improve Portuguese football.
Asked about the tense atmosphere in Portuguese football, at the press conference after the game against Estoril, which Benfica won 1-3, Jorge Jesus took the opportunity to make several criticisms.
“About refereeing in Portuguese football? This is normal. I was two and a half years out of Portugal and, when I left, there was already this pressure of wanting to win games outside the four lines. But I speak of all clubs, ”said the coach, quoted by Renascença radio.
The red technician also left harsh criticisms of the attitudes of several players on the field that, in normal plays, it seems that they were left without “an eye” or “took it with a stick”.
“Nowadays, in Portuguese football, for anything, in a normal play, one player touches the other’s eyelash and it looks like they’ve gouged out an eye. They shout for the referee to sanction. You players in Portugal are in this bullshit. There are aggressive moves that have to be punished, but there are others where they touch with a fingernail and it seems that they took it with a stick ”, he continued.
Jesus also said that it is necessary to end anti-game and that the coaches of the I League should meet to try to “improve Portuguese football”.
“They also have to put an end to the anti-game, the teams have to find defensive strategies to endure when playing against better teams. There should be a meeting with all coaches Portuguese. When I was in Saudi Arabia, I told them that this was nothing, when they spend millions and the goalkeepers after 10 minutes were already throwing themselves to the ground. The following week, the Sports Minister met with all the coaches ”, quotes the newspaper A Bola.
“It is to improve Portuguese football, to play better, and when you cannot, it is to leave this bullshit and the folklore behind. I say the same thing to my players. Must be more serious and respect football more. Everyone! ”Said the coach.
Asked about the statements made by the president of FC Porto at the end of the game against Sporting de Braga, Jesus said that he “did not even know these statements” but that, in his opinion, “what is important is Portuguese football”.
“For me, what is important is Portuguese football. It is not what the opponent’s coach or president said. The important thing is to combine ideas in defense of improving Portuguese football. As is normal, in Portugal there is a lot of this psychosis that the pressure outside the game, in the referees, in the instances that have influence that helps to win games. I don’t think so, ”he said.
“More and more, the Arbitration Council must have power because those who talk a lot have to lower the ball. We have to start talking about football, the defense of Portuguese football. I come from a country that is the country of football, where we only talk about football and where there is no constant bullshit before the games ”, he finished.
