Brazilian portal draws up the list of the best reinforcements in football Europe, with two Portuguese internationals in the middle and a player who was close to coming to Portugal.
It is a list, like all, subject to different opinions, but it stands out because of the presence of two Portuguese internationals among the elite. The Globoesporte portal listed the 10 best reinforcements from last season in European football.
The footballer who appears in second place is Rúben Dias. The young defender started the season at Benfica but, shortly after his early departure from the Champions League, the club’s accounts prevailed and he was transferred to Manchester City. He did not arrive in Manchester to be a substitute: he will reach 50 games for City in his debut season, if he plays the Champions League final at Estádio do Dragão, next Saturday. Supporters of the Premier League champion voted and indicated that the best player this season was precisely Rúben Dias. He was English champion, winner of the League Cup and can still be European champion (twice).
In seventh place was another Portuguese international: Diogo Jota. The former Wolverhampton headed for the (now) former English champions and shone for Liverpool. There was a phase of the season, between October and November, when, whenever a Liverpool game ended, the first question was “how many goals did Jota score”? 13 goals in 30 games (including one hat-trick in the Champions League) and a constant presence in an attack trio that seemed unquestionable, when he was formed by Salah, Mané and Firmino.
The name highlighted in this list is Luis Suarez. Spanish champion for Atlético de Madrid, he had been considered expendable in Barcelona – Messi did not like it – but he was an essential player in the team led by Diego Simeone. At 34, he scored 21 goals and one of them was the winning goal in the last round of the championship: “The season started with the way they despised me and Atlético opened the door for me to continue to demonstrate that I am still valid”, said the Uruguayan, after the game against Valladolid.
After Suárez and Dias, the Chelsea goalkeeper appears. Mendy left Rennes at the start of the season and arrived in London to start and to keep the irregular Kepa out of the net. It was instrumental in Chelsea’s journey to the Champions League final. In fact, in the biggest European club competition, Chelsea only conceded three goals until reaching the final in Porto.
At the doors of the podium Edinson Cavani. Benfica’s “near reinforcement” played for Manchester United and scored 17 goals. He has already renewed his contract with the defeated Europa League finalist.
We are still in the Premier League, with another former Paris Saint-Germain player: Thiago Silva is 36 years old but was a regular starter at Chelsea this season. Here’s another veteran: Burak Yilmaz, ex-Beşiktaş and French champion for Lille, where he scored 18 goals.
The only Serie A player is Achraf Hakimi, young defender who played for Borussia Dortmund and who continued to shine at Inter Milan, the new Italian champion. Closing the list are Lucas Paqueta, who left AC Milan for Lyon, and Ben Chilwell, ex-Leicester City and another Chelsea reinforcement in these choices.
