Sebastian Coltescu was suspended by UEFA until the end of the current season, due to “improper behavior” in the game between PSG and Basaksehir, but the body ruled out any racist action from the Romanian.
“It was decided suspended Sebastian Coltescu to exercise any function of referee until the end of the season, that is, until 30 June 2021, for improper behavior during a UEFA game for which he was appointed ”, reads a statement from the UEFA Ethics and Discipline Committee.
At PSG-Basaksehir, on the 8th of December, of the sixth round of the group stage of the Champions League, the Romanian served as four referees and was accused of having given a racist insult the assistant coach of the Turkish team, the Cameroonian Pierre Webó, a situation that led to the interruption of the game, which was only resumed the following day with a new refereeing team.
The incident occurred 14 minutes into the match, when Coltescu signaled the referee to expel Webo, who complained that the Romanian referee used the expression ‘negro’, refusing to leave the field and questioning: “Where is the ‘negro’? (Where is the ‘Negro’) ”.
During the suspension, in which he will not be able to whistle both nationally and internationally, the referee will have to attend a 30-day “education program”, as well as Octavian Sovre, the head judge, who escaped suspension, having only received an “official reprimand” from UEFA.
“With this decision, the Ethics and Discipline Committee found that both violated article 11 and article 6, referring to the appropriate behavior of the referees during a match, but they did not violate article 14, referring to racist or discriminatory conduct ”, explained the organization.
Pierre Webó, who was sent off in that game, was suspended for a game in European competition.
At the time, in reaction to the controversy, the fourth official said he did not consider himself a racist person. “I just try to be good. I will not read any news in the next few days. Anyone who knows me you know I’m not a racist. At least, I hope, ”said the Romanian in statements to the portal ProSport.
