Prime Time Zone, Sports: The Tata Open, the only ATP tennis tournament in South Asia, is scheduled to be held in Pune from February 1. Recently ATP announced the first seven weeks calendar for the new year. This includes the Australian Open in February. But the Tata Open is not high. This raises doubts as to whether the only ATP tournament to be held in India will take place in 2021. Tournament Director Prashant Sutar commented on this. ‘According to the ATP rules, tournaments must be held if there is no quarantine for players coming from abroad. ATP made the decision because being on quarantine was wasting players’ valuable time.
Athletes participating in the Australian Open play Dubai qualifiers in advance, and some are flown on special flights from Los Angeles, Singapore to Australia after all medical examinations. That is why the tournament is being held a few days back. In Maharashtra, on the other hand, a minimum of 14 days quarantine has been fixed for those coming from abroad. That is why the Tata Open has been postponed for now, ”he said. He clarified that the ATP would set a new date for the Tata Open after the Kovid rules were relaxed.
