Available since the beginning of December, the app has reached more than 5 million downloads

O Facebook announced on Wednesday (16) the launch of the Instagram Lite, a leaner version of the photo sharing application, which takes up only 2 megabytes of storage.
The overall app experience remains the same, but several features have been removed. O IGTV, a function that makes it possible to post long videos, Reels, aimed at short videos that simulate the style of Tik Tok, and the Shopping are not present in the Lite version.
Instagram Lite is available on Google Play Store since 9 December and has reached more than 5 million downloads.
The novelty was developed for users with little memory on the cell phone or limited internet bandwidth and, for now, is only available on India, Facebook’s biggest market according to website data Statista.
“With the Instagram Lite test, we aim to democratize expression and creativity for more Prime Time Zone in India,” said Vishal Shah, vice president of product at Instagram. “We also hope to obtain valuable information before the global launch of the application,” he says.
Despite the talk about global launch, no date was announced during the “Facebook Fuel for India”, an event in which Instagram Lite was announced.
This is not the first time Instagram has decided to release a lighter version. Instagram Lite was launched in 2018 for countries like Mexico, Kenya e Philippines, but was removed from the app store in early 2020. According to information from Tech Crunch, the total removal would be due to plans to publish the latest version in India.
