A Tesla may have the best-selling electric vehicle in the world today – the “Model 3” – but in China, a rival is selling almost twice as much. It’s called Hong Guang Mini EV, which is being produced as part of a joint venture between the American giant General Motors (GM) and the local company Wuling, which costs just $ 4,500.
Last month, sales of Hong Guang Mini EV – publicized as “the people’s means of transportation” – in China were 100% higher than sales of the Tesla Model 3 – questioned by security concerns by the Chinese.
Although the Hong Guang Mini $ 4,500 is the most popular model, you can buy the upgraded model with air conditioning for just over $ 5,000.
In October last year, the Tesla reduced the price of the Model 3 in China by 8%, making it possible to buy one for $ 36,805, eight times more expensive than the Hong Guang Mini EV. But there are obviously many issues for such a low price.
THE Mini EV uses a 9.2 kWh battery offering a range of just 75 miles (120 km) and depends on a single 17.4 horsepower electric motor and a top speed of 62 mph (100 km / h). It can accommodate up to four people – not necessarily “comfortable”.
According to the BBC, the Mini EV is winning over the Chinese not only for its inviting price, but also for the great incentive that the Chinese government offers. Apparently, it can take years to obtain a license for a gas-powered vehicle in the country, but the government guarantees a free license plate when purchasing an electric vehicle.
The Mini EV was the second best-selling electric vehicle in the world last year, ahead of the Renault Zoe and the Tesla Model Y. The Tesla Model 3 still leads the way, but Elon Musk may start to worry that the Mini EV will be available also in other parts of the world.
