To smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi surpassed the Apple in the second quarter of 2021 and became the world’s second-largest manufacturer, according to a report by market analyst firm Canalys.
Xiaomi had 17% of sales in the period, up from 14% for Apple. Who follows in the lead is Samsung, which sold 19% of smartphones in the quarter.
According to the Canalys report, Xiaomi is rapidly expanding its market outside China, with sales increasing 300% in Latin America and 50% in Europe.
Xiaomi’s growth compared to last year was 83%, well above Apple and Samsung, which grew, respectively, 1% and 15%.
Canalys notes that most of Xiaomi’s sales are in the mass market, while Apple competes only in the high-end market, with higher-value devices. Despite this, Xiaomi, along with other Chinese manufacturers like Vivo and Oppo, has been making inroads into more expensive devices.
Recently, the company launched the Mi 11, which in Brazil came for 8,000 reais.
