Amara Raja Batteries: Automotive battery maker Amara Raja Batteries has made a key decision. Lithium ion batteries are being prepared for production in Tirupati. For this, it will set up a production unit along with a special technology research hub at its manufacturing facility in Tirupati. Vijayanand, CEO, Amara Raja Batteries, said this is the first time a private company in the country has set up such a unit for a lithium ion battery.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is providing the technology required to manufacture these batteries. Amara Raja paid a certain amount to ISRO in 2019 for technology transfer and building. On the other hand, CEO Vijayanand said that up to Rs 20 crore has already been invested in the development of lithium ion batteries.
Production start in two years
Amara Raja said two-thirds of the lithium-ion battery spare parts to be produced will be available domestically. He said he was considering importing lithium, the main raw material, from Australia or some Latin American countries. Production of their lithium ion batteries will begin in the coming days. However, he said that currently electric vehicle manufacturers are importing lithium batteries from China, which is a burden for those companies.
Second in the country ..
According to Vijayanand, Amara Raja Batteries is currently the second largest producer of lead acid based batteries in the country. Although the production of lithium ion batteries has started, the market for lead acid batteries will continue for a few more decades.
