“The criteria are essential: the health, the will and the support of the Socialist Party. I would not be a candidate for any other party, nor independent, except for the Socialist Party, where I feel very comfortable. To this day, the day I’m talking to you, the three are satisfied, ”he said.
“I have normal health, as far as I know, the Socialist Party, from what I have heard, maintains confidence in my mandate and, thirdly, the will at this time also exists. But beyond that, it requires a deeper reflection, which I have not yet done. I hope in May to have a decision on this matter that, if it were today, was positive ”, added the mayor.
In relation to your eventual opponent – Ricardo Batista Leite, supported by PSD – Basília Horta said she didn’t know him personally.
“The only thing I have to say to Dr. Baptista Leite or any other candidate that arises is that the Chamber is entirely at your disposal to provide you with all the elements you want to be able to carry out a campaign with knowledge and consistency”, he guaranteed.
When he announced his choice, the Social Democratic leader, Rui Rio, did not want to dwell on this candidate much because he was “certainly one of the most well-known deputies of the Assembly of the Republic”.
Asked about the controversy of social support, Basílio Horta took the opportunity to leave wide praise for António Costa, who gave a “elegant” answer to the President of the Republic. He also added that Costa is “a person also with a great capacity to adapt to problems and to solve them”.
“He’s a brilliant tactic, our Prime Minister, one of the most brilliant tactics I have known in my political life and which is already long. He responded in an elegant manner. Because the problem is not really legal, it is political ”, he said, in statements to DN.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, on the other hand, has a “brilliant intelligence” and a “person of principles”, said Basílio Horta.
Regarding the President’s second term, the mayor said that “Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is a person of principles. And he will not take advantage of the second term to attack the government without reason. I am perfectly convinced that what he says, which is institutional solidarity, he will maintain ”.
