The process of accepting nominations will start from Wednesday in the gram panchayats where elections are to be held on the 21st of this month. The State Election Commission and the Panchayati Raj Department are making arrangements to conduct elections in 3,299 panchayats in 162 zones in 13 districts. Elections will be held for 34,112 ward posts with sarpanch posts in the respective villages. Nominations will be accepted from 10.30am on Wednesday to 5pm on the 12th.
The third phase of panchayat elections will be held on the 17th of this month. As part of this, the process of filing nominations for a total of 3,323 panchayat elections has been completed. 17,664 are in the ring for the Sarpanchi positions. 77,447 contested for the positions of 31,516 ward members.
As many as 539 sarpanch posts have been unanimously allotted in the 3,328 gram panchayats where elections are to be held on the 13th of this month in the second tranche, state Election Commission officials said. Of the 33,570 ward posts in the respective panchayats, 12,605 ward posts were also unanimously elected, officials said.
The state election commission breathed a sigh of relief as the first installment of elections ended peacefully. The second installment is all set for the election. The state police department, on the other hand, is making strict security arrangements for the two tranche elections.
