The president of the CDS-PP, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos, reiterated this Wednesday that the party will support the independent Rui Moreira, in case the mayor of Porto decides to run again in the 2021 municipal elections.
“We have already reiterated this through our local structures, through the Porto council, which we are as we have always been with Rui Moreira. In case you make the decision to re-apply, we will once again be available to support you and for the third time we win the elections for the Porto Chamber ”, he said, when asked, in Porto, about whether he would be in favor of a“ great coalition right wing ”in support of Rui Moreira’s re-election.
The centrist leader, who was speaking to journalists at the end of a meeting with businessmen from the restaurant, bars and events sector, stressed that the other parties will “naturally” have to make their assessment and re-weigh the political strategy, but the position of the CDS will be the same.
“We have no doubts where we have always been and where we should be because we believe in the project for Porto, a cosmopolitan city, developed from a social, economic and cultural point of view. A program that has already proven itself, with the CDS always carried out and politically comforted“, said.
At the end of the meeting, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos also indicated that it was expected that the programmatic agreement between CDS and PSD with a view to concluding pre-electoral agreements, currently under construction, completed in the “next few weeks”.
“Then the floor is passed on to our grassroots structures, municipalities and districts, where coalitions will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis, based on the reality and context of each municipality,” he concluded.
Rui Moreira’s re-election has been at the center of the controversy, after the weekly Express have reported that the vice president of PSD, Salvador Malheiro, met Rui Moreira on Thursday to propose a coalition in the municipal elections, a charge that would have been refused by the Mayor of Porto.
According to a party source led by Rui Rio, cited by the weekly Express, the objective of the meeting was to propose that Rui Moreira go to votes in a center-right coalition, formed by PSD, CDS and the Independent Movement.
Later, in statements to the Express, Salvador Malheiro said that it was “false” that the PSD asked Rui Moreira to re-run in the next municipalities as an independent in the social-democratic lists and guaranteed that the proposal for a possible candidacy in coalition with the PSD “Left Rui Moreira”.
With the covid-19 pandemic, in addition to the names to be launched on the lists, Rui Rio has another “hot potato” in his hands. The PSD leader will be considering a scenario of postponing the municipal elections in two months, taking into account the objectives foreseen in the vaccination plan of the Portuguese population, but the proposal is not yet closed. If the date is changed to November, it implies the political management of the next State Budget.
For his part, Rui Moreira seems to intend to proceed with an independent candidacy, having even admitted the possibility of form a political party to circumvent changes to local law. The changes, approved last year by the PS and PSD, do not allow independent movements to apply to parishes and chambers.
