This Sunday, the prime minister mentioned the conquest of a public, universal and accessible National Health Service (SNS), with the 25th of April 1974, during the inauguration of the new Health Center in Algueirão, the largest in the country.

“I am particularly pleased to celebrate the 25th of April with the inauguration of the largest Health Center in the country. […] It was the 25th of April that allowed us to have the National Public Health Service, universal, tending to be free and accessible to all, regardless of where they live or whatever their economic situation ”, said António Costa, during the inauguration ceremony of that health unit, in the municipality of Sintra , which was also attended by the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, and the Mayor of Sintra, Basílio Horta.

The Prime Minister also recalled that it was the 25th of April that made it possible to join the European Union (EU), which provided funds that paid 50% of this Health Center today inaugurated.

“The European Union is not just a distant thing that is there in Brussels. It is in all the ‘Algueirões Mem Martins’ that exist in the 27 member states ”, he pointed out.

“I know that, in the face of difficulties, some dedicate themselves to being official mourners of the regime, but given the difficulties we have to say how we are going to overcome them ”, affirmed Costa, quoted by the online newspaper Observador.

The official recalled that the next Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) foresees funds to reinforce the diagnostic equipment in this type of health units, as well as for the oral and mental health aspects, so that they are new features of the NHS.

The Minister of Health pointed out that 466 million euros are expected to allocate to the health area in the coming years.

“Are there still Portuguese people without a family health team? There are, but we are here to see that this is overcome, “guaranteed Marta Temido, leaving a” very deep and heartfelt “thanks to those who” made the 25th of April and who fought so that those who get to health care do not have to proof of financial capacity to move forward ”.

“Being here today is also a way of honor the founding fathers of the SNS. We are immensely proud to be able to count on all those who – every day – wear their robes, put on their clogs, put on their stethoscopes and work in the hundreds of units of the NHS ”, said the official, quoted by the same digital newspaper.

“There are thousands of men and women who have given up more comfortable choices to be doing what they are doing. The pandemic has reinforced our confidence in the strength of our NHS, ”he said.

About three dozen people gathered at one of the gates that give access to the new Health Center, protesting against the lack of family doctors in the county and claiming the construction of a new hospital. “New building, old problems”, shouted the popular.
