Arrangements are being made to hang a woman in the country for the first time in independent India. A Mathura court has ordered jail authorities to make arrangements for the execution of a woman who brutally murdered family members. The precedents of the case are as follows. Shabnam, a woman from Mathura, came in contact with a man named Salim and later had a physical relationship with him. The family strongly rebuked Shabnam for misbehaving before the wedding. However, Shabnam did not change her mind and decided to marry Salim. The permission of the family members was sought for this. They refused and placed Shabnam under house arrest. Shabnam, along with her boyfriend Salim, killed seven family members in the middle of the night on April 14, 2008. Five days later, the accused was arrested by the police.
Shabnam was already seven weeks pregnant when medical tests were carried out in order to move them both to jail. The police took her to jail. It turns out that Shabnam was the one who encouraged Salim to kill his family members. She also holds an MA in English and a degree in Geography. On July 14, 2010, the Mathura court, which conducted a full hearing in the case, handed down a sensational verdict sentencing both the accused to death. The convicts challenged this and approached the Allahabad High Court, which upheld the judgment of the lower court and dismissed the review petitions. With this, Salim and Shabnam approached the Supreme Court in 2015. Even there they encountered a backlash. Later, as a last resort, he apologized to then President Pranab Mukherjee, but he refused. The last time a woman was executed in British India was in 1870.
