After three years, the process for alleged falsification of documents involving ex-PSD general secretary Feliciano Barreiras Duarte was dismissed, revealed an order from the Public Ministry (MP), to which the Express had access.
Barreiras Duarte, who was chosen for the role by the social-democratic leader Rui Rio, resigned in March 2018 due to a controversy related to alleged false data that on your resume.
“If there is no evidence that the document in question is materially or intellectually false and that the defendant, when invoking the quality of ‘visiting scholar’, was acting in the knowledge that this was not true, it is necessary to conclude that the prosecution of the criminal action is not viable. practice of the crimes provided for in the Penal Code ”, reads in the dispatch, quoted by the newspaper.
At the time, Barreiras Duarte reportedly put on the curriculum the information that he had been a guest researcher at the University of Berkeley, California. Her then supervisor in the doctoral thesis at that university, Deolinda Adão, informed that this “did not have qualifications to be a ‘visiting scholar’ in Berkeley since he was not a doctor”.
According to the Express, steps were taken to ensure that Barreiras Duarte’s doctorate at the Autonomous University of Lisbon was done in partnership with Berkeley, the defendant being “convinced that he had successfully completed the application”. The MP therefore concluded that “the quality of ‘visiting scholar’ it was not a determinant of the granting of doctoral status by UAL ”, thus exonerating the defendant.
The MP concludes “what I always said: I did not commit any crime, I forged documents or my resume,” he told the Barreiras Duarte newspaper.
“I believed in Justice and I had reasons for that, because justice has been done. But nothing erases the fact that my name was dragged in the mud in a hasty and clumsy way, with painful consequences for me and my family. I believe that this case, which has never been the case, as is now confirmed, must be a pretext for serious reflection for all political agents, journalists and commentators ”, he said in a written note.
