Marques Mendes took advantage of his usual space at SIC’s Jornal da Noite to talk about the current state of the pandemic in the country. From social social support to European bazooka, without forgetting the preparation of local authorities and the controversy surrounding the President of the Court of Auditors.
After several weeks of confinement, Marques Mendes considers that after the storm, and the commentator started his usual commentary space by Jornal da Noite da SIC to highlight the good news brought by the figures of the pandemic in Portugal. “Confinement is working”, he stressed, at a time when the number of infected people has fallen.
According to a political analyst, it is time for the government to start preparing the possible deconfiguration, similarly to what other countries have already done. Marques Mendes agrees that education is a priority, but that there are other priorities that are being left aside: testing and screening.
Already vaccination is “at the level of other EU countries”. On the possibility of using vaccines of Chinese or Russian origin, Marques Mendes decided to inquire in Brussels and has news: the vaccine from China was not even considered and the vaccine from Russia also has null hypotheses.
It is the “economic and social pandemic” that Marques Mendes talks about, highlighting “good decisions, bad ones and concerns for the future”. Starting with the good news, the political analyst sets the stage for payment to parents accompanying their children at home.
With regard to tomorrow, highlight the planning problems related to the default. And at this point is the european bazooka, and the government’s options, which concern Marques Mendes, as he considers that the plan presented last week lacks ambition.
Another subject highlighted was the municipal elections. There may still be several months to go before October, but “the elections are beginning to change and will change even more”, considers Marques Mendes. The ex-PSD leader analyzes the risks and opportunities of going to the polls and concludes that the PCP is in danger of going back down and PS can mimic a swamp situation like that of Guterres two decades ago, so this is an opportunity for the PSD.
The political analyst considers it an error that Rui Rio start a controversy with Rui Moreira, when his dispute should be with António Costa.
Last Thursday, in an interview with the Observer, Rio accused Rui Moreira of not being a “trustworthy” person and guaranteed that he would never be able to support “someone who has real estate interests in the city where he is mayor”.
The SIC commentator understands that, “For PSD, none of this is good”, because “when it criticizes the mayors it diverts the attention of the Prime Minister and the Government, therefore, it leaves the Government on the loose, which is bad for the opposition and bad for democracy”.
Regarding the new president of the Constitutional Court, Marques Mendes considered that “It’s a pointless controversy”. “Whether you like João Caupers’ ideas, style and language, he has the right to have those ideas, that style and that language,” he said of the man who is also a state advisor.
