The Ministry of National Defense will extend the suspension of National Defense Day calls until at least April 30. The new dates are scheduled to start on May 1st.
According to a government statement, the Ministry of National Defense will again postpone the traditional National Defense Day. “In view of the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of National Defense decided to extend the suspension of the beginning of the 17th edition of National Defense Day (DDN), until April 30,” reads.
According to the Government, the extension of the suspension of National Defense Day in all Outreach Centers affects “a total of 54,335 young people which corresponds to 25,710 summoned between January 7 and February 28 and 28,625 citizens summoned to fulfill their military duty between March 1 and April 30 ”.
The Ministry of National Defense added that the 17th edition of National Defense Day now has the start-up scheduled for 1 May.
The 17th edition of National Defense Day will cover a total of 58,943 young people born in 2002, along with 30,641 whose attendance was postponed due to the suspension during 2020.
At the beginning of the pandemic, National Defense Day was postponed several times due to the epidemiological evolution in Portugal. After being suspended since March 9, National Defense Day returned to face-to-face format on September 2.
The ministry said, at the time, that “safe routes and adopted the social exclusion measures in force ”, all spaces will be cleaned and personal protection materials will be available, namely hand sanitizer and masks,“ which will be mandatory for everyone ”.
In early January, due to the increase in covid-19 cases in Portugal, National Defense Day was postponed to the end of February, and this postponement has now been renewed.
Since it was created in 2004, more than 1.2 million of young people participated in this initiative, which aims to sensitize the young to National Defense and publicize the role of the Armed Forces.
