“If we are not in a hurry, the future will not judge us with benevolence”, state managers say in a letter released on Thursday
Governors of 13 states released a letter on Thursday afternoon, 4, addressed to the president Jair Bolsonaro, in which they ask for the “immediate adoption of the necessary measures in order to make it feasible to obtain – from foreign entities and international organizations – new doses of immunizers against Covid-19“. State managers suggest that the federal government resort, if necessary and possible, to the World Health Organization (WHO). The request comes amid the worsening pandemic in Brazil. According to Fiocruz, at least 18 states and the Federal District have an ICU bed occupancy rate above 80%. In addition, this Wednesday, 3, Brazil broke a new record in the number of deaths – in the last 24 hours, 1,910 deaths were recorded due to the new coronavirus, according to data from the National Council of Health Secretaries (CONASS).
“We recognize that, at this serious moment, there is an extraordinary demand for vaccines in the world, with different suppliers. We followed the announcement of new acquisitions by the Ministry of Health, but we also realized that it is necessary to streamline purchasing mechanisms, explore and implement all available means of acquisition, in order to vaccinate, in the shortest possible time, the greatest number of Brazilians. If we are not in a hurry, the future will not judge us benevolently. For this reason, we ask the Federal Government, especially through the Ministries of Health and Foreign Affairs, to make an even greater effort to obtain, in the short term, a considerably higher number of doses. If possible, we also suggest the request for support and intermediation by the Organization
World Health Organization ”, says an excerpt from the letter.
“The Federated Entities have made all their efforts, but they are at the limit of their strengths and possibilities. In recent months, they installed thousands of new vacancies in Intensive Care Units, hired health professionals from different areas and made the purchase of equipment feasible, in addition to investing in measures such as social distance and the orientation of the population through clear communication strategies. . This set of actions, although indispensable, shows that it is close to exhaustion. Nobody disagrees that, in the coming weeks, perhaps months, the pandemic will continue to take lives, threaten, challenge and sadden us all ”, they add.
In the document, the governors also state that, despite the efforts of state managers, the rate of vaccination in the country “is still very low”. “At the current pace, unfortunately, we will go through the year regretting the irreparable loss of life, in addition to the low expectation of effectively immunizing all priority groups. The increasingly successful examples of countries that are containing the pandemic through vaccination, combined with other prevention and hygiene practices, do not refer to anything other than the political and diplomatic effort of all – led at the level of relations by the Brazilian Government – in order to guarantee new vaccine shipments right away ”, they add.
The letter is signed by the governors Renan Filho (Alagoas), Waldez Goes (Amapá), Rui Costa (Bahia), Camilo Santana (Ceará), Renato Casagrande (Espírito Santo), Flávio Dino (Maranhão), Mauro Mendes (Mato Grosso), Helder Barbalho (Pará), João Azevêdo (Paraíba), Paulo Câmara (Pernambuco), Wellington Dias (Piauí), Fátima Bezerra (Rio Grande do Norte), Eduardo Leite (Rio Grande do Sul) and Belivaldo Chagas (Sergipe).
