Polling will be held today for 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayats and 231 taluka panchayats in Gujarat. Polling, which began at 7 a.m., will be calm. Crowds lined up in large numbers to cast their ballots since morning. The state election commission has put in place stringent security arrangements within the Kovid rules for local body elections. The counting of votes will take place on March 2, the state election commission said.
In Gujarat, polling will be held for 2,720 seats in 680 wards, 980 seats in district panchayats and 4,773 seats in taluka panchayats for a total of 8,473 seats. According to the Gujarat State Election Commission, 36,008 polling booths have been set up across the state. About 3.04 crore people in the state are expected to exercise their voting right for this election.
Police have tightened security to ensure peaceful polling in the state. Special state reserve police units have been set up to prevent any untoward incidents. A total of 44,000 police personnel, including 54,000 home guards from 12 CAPF companies, are involved in election duties.
BJP and Congress are contesting all the seats in the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party has been the dominant force in the state for years. BJP supporters are in the highest positions so far. However, this time Congress hopes to take power. The Congress is of the view that the recent rise in fuel prices is in opposition to the ruling party which will help them win the highest number of seats.
Meanwhile, 2,097 people from other parties are contesting. The Aam Aadmi Party, Godhra, Modasa and Bharuch have fielded their candidates. MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said the party had fielded candidates in minority-dominated municipalities. If so, political parties expect competition between the two major parties.
