Doctor is in his fifth term as city councilor in the city of Rio de Janeiro; he is the son of Colonel Jairo, a former state deputy who was arrested under Operation Furna da Onça
Jairo Souza Santos Junior, better known as Dr. Jairinho, was arrested on Thursday morning, 8, accused of doubly qualified homicide of the boy Henry Borel, four years old, dead a month ago. The doctor, 44, was born in Bangu, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Despite his medical training, he never practiced. Jairinho followed in his father’s footsteps, Colonel Jairo, in the political career. Rio’s state deputy from 2002 to 2018, the colonel is suspected of involvement with militias. In November 2018, he was arrested for Federal police (PF) within the scope of Operation Furna da Onça, which investigated state deputies allegedly involved in corruption, money laundering and allotment of public offices and outsourced labor in state administration bodies. According to the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), Jairo received R $ 50 thousand per month to vote on projects from the former governor’s bench Sérgio Cabral (MDB). Jairo’s name was also mentioned in the report of suspicious movements by the Financial Activities Control Council (Coaf).
His son Jairinho entered politics in 2004, at the age of 27, and was the most voted councilor in the PSC, with 24,000 votes. In 2008, he was re-elected. In 2012, still through the PSC, the doctor received 43,181 votes. He was elected councilor in 2016 by the PMDB and re-elected in 2020 by Solidarity. During his five terms, the councilman was president of the Education Commission, vice president of the Health Commission, president of the Special Commission of the Municipal Master Plan and 1st Deputy of the Executive Board. He was also one of the government leaders of Marcelo Crivella (Republicans). In 2020, Jairinho supported the campaign of the opponent of Crivella, the current mayor Eduardo Paes (DEM). The councilor joined the Council of Ethics and Parliamentary Decorum in the City Council three days after Henry’s death.
