The leader of the Liberal Initiative (IL) believes that the PS may provoke a political crisis in October, when municipal elections are held, if it anticipates the possibility of having an absolute majority.
In an interview with Diário de Notícias and TSF radio, this Saturday, João Cotrim de Figueiredo said he believes that if the PS anticipates the possibility of having an absolute majority in October, it will know how to create a political crisis to anticipate the legislative ones.
“There are already signs that we not reaching the end of the legislature. But it depends mainly on the analysis that the Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the PS makes about the possibility of having an absolute majority ”, said the president of the Liberal Initiative.
In Cotrim de Figueiredo’s view, this eventual political crisis “can never be caused because the prime minister is skilled and knows that whoever causes political crises is penalized”. However, this “can create the conditions for that crisis to happen and it is necessary to anticipate elections”.
“It’s very tempting for the PS, as we know it and as it has developed in Portuguese society, preside over a Government at a time when there will be funds to distribute and an economic recovery to manage ”, he said.
“The State Budget (OE) will certainly be the touch. And, I repeat, I think it will only happen if the PS has the notion that it is possible to reach the absolute majority alone ”, added the only deputy from IL.
Cotrim de Figueiredo also reinforced that his analysis does not only cover the PS’s will to “exercise power in a more hegemonic way”, but also the left-wing parties, “which also have other concerns, of survival”.
“It is the opposite case: if they think that early elections could lead to a continued erosion of their electoral base will have to swallow some frogs so as not to allow this political crisis to occur. It will be interesting times, tactically, on the left ”, he highlighted.
The president of the Liberal Initiative was asked about the party’s growth, visible in the three elections in which he participated (29 thousand votes in the European ones, 68 thousand in the legislative ones and 134 thousand in the recent presidential ones) and, taking into account, what will be the goal for the next legislative.
The deputy explained that in IL there is no “habit of making quantitative goals” and that it is a party “that is born and exists to affirm different ideas and projects”. And he took the opportunity to affirm: “We are only interested in captivating and attracting people to the strict extent that they are captivated by these ideas and this project.”
The liberal also wanted to make it clear that the party will not “use shortcuts to grow”, because “it is no use growing up based on people who do not truly believe in a liberal project for Portugal”.
In the same interview, the president of IL opened the door to the centrist Adolfo Mesquita Nunes, stressing that, if he “feels attracted, he is welcome in the Liberal Initiative”, but guaranteeing that, despite contacting regularly, they never spoke about this topic.
“If Adolfo, with whom I contact regularly – we have never talked about this topic, here remains this inconfidence, in this case, about something that has not happened -, to think that his political future continues to pass through participation in parties and that in the Liberal Initiative that future exists because sure you will be welcome, like any convincingly liberal person ”, he declared.
