U turn on bpl cards : The Karnataka minister has backtracked on a statement he made on ration card holders below the poverty line. Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Minister Umesh Katti’s statement that ration cards should be given up if there are items like TVs and fridges has led to a serious scandal. The minister said he was withdrawing the remarks in the wake of this. He clarified that there are no definite restrictions for ration‌ rice cards and cardholders need not worry.

At a media conference in Belgaum on Monday, Umesh made a sensational announcement on ration cards and soon announced that the ration card would be cut off if there was a TV or fridge. Those with TVs, fridges, two-wheelers and five acres of land have been warned not to give up their BPL ration cards or take action against them. Opposition Congress and JDS were furious over the minister’s remarks. This caused a great commotion in the state. The minister who came down with this .. revealed that he was withdrawing his remarks. He explained that he had shared the information he received from Delhi with the media. Neither I nor Chief Minister Yeddyurappa has made it clear that he will not give any directions on parameters like TV and fridge. Our government works for the poor. The minister said he was committed to giving more ration‌ cards across the state. He said that soon ration cardholders will continue to be given free food grains like copper, maize and rice. He declined to comment further.
