Journalist Priya Ramani has been acquitted of all charges in a defamation suit filed against her by former Union Minister MJ Akbar. She said she hopes women who face sexual harassment in the workplace will no longer have the courage to come forward to complain with this verdict. (The court acquitted Eema in this case.) Ramani said that even though I stood in the court as the accused, the court believed that my argument was true. She alleged that the suit filed by MJ Akbar could not intimidate her. She also claimed that he had filed a defamation suit to intimidate other women who had been sexually abused at his (Akbar’s) hands. She described the verdict as “amazing”.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey, however, said that it was a fact that in most cases sexual harassment took place behind closed doors and that many women could not express their experiences out of social fear or fear that their character would be hurt.
Meanwhile, in his 41-page defamation suit, M.J. Akbar is accused of tarnishing his reputation over the decades with allegations made by this journalist. He also lost his dignity in the government.
