The Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira

The Mayor of Porto said this Monday that the high-speed line and the new bridge over the Douro River, which is part of the Metro do Porto expansion project, must be “thought together”.

“I wrote a letter to the two ministers [das Infraestruturas e do Ambiente] proposing a meeting to three on this matter because it seems to me that the issue of metro expansion, on the one hand, and the issue of high speed, on the other, cannot be seen separately, “said independent Rui Moreira.

The mayor, who answered a question posed by socialist deputy Pedro Braga de Carvalho during the Porto Municipal Assembly, said that the two questions should be “Thought in an articulated way”.

As for the new metro bridge over the Douro River, which will link Santo Ovídio (Vila Nova de Gaia) to Casa da Música (Porto), Rui Moreira said that the municipality “recognizes the extraordinary importance” of this connection, in particular because it “reduces the influx” at the Arrábida Bridge .

“The demand studies are available, the studies of what will be the impact on traffic, these, at this moment, I cannot tell you, but what is interesting is that when we look at the demand studies they are extraordinarily important”, he said, adding, however, that the inclusion of the bridge in the “urban fabric is something that concerns” the municipality.

“We know everything that surrounds the visual protection of the Arrábida Bridge, so it is absolutely crucial that the project in terms of architecture is a high quality project because going to have a very significant visual impact”, Defended the mayor.

As for the new high-speed line, Rui Moreira said “little to know” about the topic, referring that the meeting he proposed “was not considered opportune by members of the Government”.

“The Minister of Infrastructure, Pedro Nuno Santos, expressed my interest, the Minister of the Environment, Matos Fernandes, told me that we are not talking about the same thing ”, he added.

The mayor also defended that the high speed line must be “very well” thought in terms of structuring the Metropolitan Area of Porto (AMP), namely, how “High speed must enter the center of the AMP”.

On October 23, the Minister for Territorial Cohesion, Ana Abrunhosa, pointed out the Atlantic link Lisbon-Porto-Vigo as the Portuguese priority for the Iberian high-speed network, warning that the Portuguese Government does not accept the “imposed solution” by Spain that prioritizes the Lisbon-Madrid connection.

In the presentation of the National Investment Program (PNI) 2030, on October 22, the Minister of Infrastructure announced that the goals for the railway are centered, among others, on the creation of a new Porto-Vigo line (Spain) lasting hour, as well as the electrification of the grid until 2030.

Bolhão, Intermodal and Cinema Batalha

The Mayor of Porto also affirmed that the Mercado do Bolhão, the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal and the Cinema Batalha are concluded in the second half of this year, but that the cinema will only open in January.

“Nobody more than I want these works to be concluded before the end of the mandate, I think we all do,” said independent Rui Moreira.

The mayor, who was responding to a question raised by Social Democratic MP Mariana Macedo during the Porto Municipal Assembly on interventions in the city, said that Mercado do Bolhão “will surely be ready during the second half of this year”.

The Bolhão Market restoration contract was officially consigned on May 15, 2018, with a two-year deadline for completion of the works.

In December 2019, the municipality announced that the requalification works, which were scheduled to end in May 2020, would be extended for another year, due to the need to change “the constructive method”.

The amendment was approved on March 27, by the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC) and implies “the dismantling of some metallic elements and the demolition of three of the four existing concrete slabs in the upper galleries of the market”.

Rui Moreira said that the Campanhã Intermodal Terminal, which started in September 2019, and Cinema Batalha, a recovery project attributed to architects Alexandre Alves Costa and Sérgio Fernandez, should also be completed at the same time.

“The same thing with the Terminal Intermodal de Campanhã and also Cinema Batalha, although in relation to Cinema Batalha it is foreseen that its opening to the public, the new functions that I will present very soon, will only happen in the beginning of next year” , revealed.
