Since Sunday, nearly 15,000 people have joined a virtual public petition demanding the deportation of anti-racist activist Mamadou Ba, due to derogatory comments about the late decorated military officer Marcelino da Mata.
“This public petition serves for the Assembly of the Republic to vote in favor of expulsion from Portugal of someone who does not feel well in Portugal nor with our culture and values. May this expulsion serve as an example ”, the text reads, which has more than 14,800 signatures.
According to the legislation in force, “any petition signed by a minimum of one thousand citizens must be published in the Diário da Assembly of the Republic and the petitioners are heard in a parliamentary committee and, if there are more than four thousand subscribing citizens, the same it has to be considered in a plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic.
The petitioners complain that the former parliamentary adviser to BE and the director of the SOSRacismo association “ slanderous statements on Twitter against the most decorated military of Portuguese history, lieutenant-colonel Marcelino da Mata, one day after his death “, at the age of 80, victim of covid-19.
Mamadou Ba criticized the fact that the CDS-PP presented a vote of condolence in Parliament for the death of “the bloodthirsty Marcelino da Mata”.
According to the activist, the late founder of the elite troop “Comandos” will have declared that he never delivered “a turra (slang for African independence fighter) to PIDE (International Police and State Defense of the Salazar fascist regime), before“ cut the tomatoes, stuffed them in his mouth, and stayed there watching them die ”.
“They complain about the careless use of the term ‘fascist’ and refute the ideological affiliation to fascism. But they invest in paying homage to sinister figures like Cónego Melo, Kaúlza de Arriaga and Marcelino da Mata. Marcelino da Mata is a war criminal who deserves no respect at all, ”added Mamadou Ba.
On Sunday, the CDS-PP demanded the “immediate departure” of Mamadou Ba from the working group for the Prevention and Combat of Racism and Discrimination, created by the Government in January, for insulting Marcelino da Mata.
“THE CDS is enraged with me because of a war criminal. It’s your fight for the squad back to fascism. What matters is that they can no longer invoke the ‘white man’. What a lack of political imagination! ”Replied Mamadou Ba, again on the same social network.
However, the extreme right-wing parliamentary party Chega announced that it would file a complaint with Mamadou Ba to the Attorney General’s Office for “seriously offending the memory of a deceased person”, a crime that is punishable by six months in prison.
Marcelino da Mata, the most decorated military officer in the Portuguese Army, who died on Thursday, served in more than two thousand operations in the Colonial War and, in the post-25 April 1974, was arrested and tortured by elements of the extreme left, then exiled in Spain until the counter-coup on November 25, 1975 (which ended the Ongoing Revolutionary Process).
However, the Portuguese fighter was banned from entering the territory of independent Guinea-Bissau, his homeland.
