The Judiciary Police (PJ) oversaw and photographed a 2017 dinner between Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira and former judge Rui Rangel, both accused in the Operation Lex process.
THE Morning mail this Monday said that when the Judicial Police (PJ) learned, through telephone interceptions, that there was going to be a dinner at Estádio da Luz between Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira and ex-judge Rui Rangel, he decided to keep an eye on the date.
The surveillance operation, which took place on May 23, 2017, was carried out in various parts of the city of Lisbon and the inspectors of the PJ photographed the meeting.
These images appear in an appendix to the Operation Lex process, to which the CM had access.
According to the morning man, the dinner took place in a “reserved area” at the 3º Anel restaurant, at Estádio da Luz. In addition to Rangel and Luís Filipe Vieira, the vice-president of Benfica, Fernando Tavares, and the lawyer Jorge Barroso.
PJ inspectors, posing as customers, entered the restaurant and followed the arrivals at Estádio da Luz. Luís Filipe Vieira went through door 18 with Nuno Gomes and the driver and security guard at 8:51 pm, joining the guests at the restaurant to a dinner that ended around midnight.
Operation Lex, made public in January 2018 and is still under investigation, has as its defendant the judge Rui Rangel, his ex-wife and judge Fatima Galante and the judicial officer Octávio Correia, all from the Lisbon Court of Appeal, the lawyer Santos Martins and the president of Benfica, Luís Filipe Vieira, among others.
Luís Filipe Vieira is accused of improper offer of advantage for having offered tickets and trips to Rangel, who, meanwhile, was expelled from the judiciary. In exchange, according to the Public Ministry (MP), the president of Benfica intended the help of the then magistrate to resolve a pending tax case in Sintra.
In Vieira’s defense in Operation Lex, it is pointed out that “the presence of renowned or prestigious supporters from various quarters of national society in the Presidential Tribune of the Stadium is a tradition long followed by Benfica“.
As an example, the defense of the leader refers to the invitation by the club to 22 judges to watch the game against Basel (1-1), of the Champions League, in November 2011, at the Estádio da Luz. Among these 22 judges there were two Supreme Councilors, 18 Appeal judges and two law judges
The PJ followed all the steps of the ex-judge, who is the main defendant in Operation Lex, for a year between 2016 and 2017.
