The general secretary of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) Jerónimo de Sousa

The secretary-general of the PCP asked the Government, this Saturday, 100% support for workers who are at home with their children, paid “immediately and with retroactive effects”, and defended a “sector by sector” deconfination plan.

Speaking at a public session in Lisbon, Jerónimo de Sousa lamented that “PS, PSD and CDS-PP” rejected in the Assembly of the Republic the PCP proposal that provided for “the 100% wage payment to those who are assisting children up to the age of 16, while schools remain closed ”.

“We are again challenging the Government to resolve this situation immediately and with retroactive effects, without discrimination and ensuring social support to those who need them and to the extent of that need,” he said.

The communist leader warned of the “Unsustainable situation” “who has to stay at home with their children” and “sees a third of their wages cut”, and regretted that, even with the new rules recently defined by the Government, “only wages paid 100% are paid to single-parent families or in cases where parents can alternate weekly stay at home taking care of their children ”.

“The truth is that there are hundreds of thousands of families for whom such an alternation is impossible, starting with the families of essential workers, who are thus pushed into a perverse choice between lose a third of salary or keep telecommuting taking care of children “, warned Jerónimo de Sousa, arguing that the PCP proposals that were rejected” would solve this situation “.

Remember that there are three situations in which families can choose between teleworking or exceptional support: single-parent families, families that are in charge of children until the end of the 1st cycle and families that are in charge of a dependent person with an equal disability or more than 60% disability.

Support currently corresponds to two-thirds of the worker’s basic remuneration, but in cases where support is shared between the two parents and also in single-parent families, the support is now 100%, with the differential being financed by Social Security.

The communist leader spoke at the public session “Salaries, hours, health and family in teleworking”, which took place in a garden in Lisbon and was attended by about 30 people who completed the distance between themselves and wore a mask. Before Jerónimo de Sousa, several workers gave their testimonies about their experience with teleworking.

With regard to combating the pandemic, the PCP’s secretary general stressed that “more than decreeing a state of emergency over a state of emergency, confinement over confinement, what is needed is to apply the measures that immediately stop the epidemic and that allow it to be kept under control for a period“, Among which” strengthen the public health teams, guarantee the vaccination plan, strengthen the National Health Service “.

In the communist’s opinion, in order to face the social and economic crisis, it is also necessary to “guarantee social support to those who need it, stop unemployment, prevent bankruptcies”.

Reiterating that “confinement is an exception, it is not a solution”, and that the “social and economic cost of prolonging confinement is unbearable for the country in the short, medium and long term”, Jerónimo de Sousa defended that “it is necessary plan and define, area by area, sector by sector, how to return to life, guaranteeing safety conditions for all ”.

“It is necessary to define the conditions for the closed activities to resume as soon as possible in schools, cultural and sporting activities, commerce or restaurants. This is not the time for the Government to save efforts and investments, it is the time to plan and move forward decisively to create the conditions for the resumption of all activities ”, he considered.

The communist leader also affirmed that “it is unacceptable, it is an insatiable contradiction, that the fascinating advances in the fields of science and technology leave out the workers, their rights, in the name of profit and exploitation”, stressing that the PCP will continue to fight “until the justice that is required in this matter is achieved”.
