The states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Lakshadweep Islands have inmates who are subject to capacity. 3.30 lakh under-trial prisoners
Under-trial prisoners outnumber convicts Of the total 4,78,600 inmates, 3,30,487 are under-trial inmates. Of the 4.78 lakh inmates, only 1.48 lakh have completed their trials and are serving sentences. Uttar Pradesh has a total of over one lakh inmates, including 73,000 under-trial prisoners. There are 31,000 prisoners in Bihar, 27,000 in Maharashtra, 24,000 in Madhya Pradesh, 16,000 in West Bengal and 6717 in Telangana, while there are 4,384 under-trial prisoners.
