She is the first Indian woman to be hanged in the Amrohi murder case in Uttar Pradesh. Shabnam, who has a double MA in English and Geography, had an illicit affair with a young man named Salim who dropped out of sixth grade. She wanted to marry Salim, who works in a sawmill near his home. But their marriage was thwarted by other members of her family and the two plotted their murder together. On the night of April 14-15, 2008, Shabnam killed seven members of his family. Eventually, she strangled her nephew without even seeing the baby. Shabnam and Salim were arrested on April 19, 2008, five days after the seven were killed.
In 2008, Shabnam gave birth to a baby boy. They challenged the decision of the District Sessions Court on July 14, 2010 to hang Shabnam and Salim in the Allahabad High Court. The court also upheld his death sentence. They also went to the Supreme Court against it. In 2015, the Supreme Court upheld the Allahabad court’s verdict. Shabnam pleaded with then President Pranab Mukherjee to pardon him if all legal channels were closed. But Pranab denied it. Shabnam and Salim finally filed a review petition in the Supreme Court.
