The union representing SEF inspectors this Thursday called for the resignation of the Minister of Internal Administration, accusing him of lying to the Assembly of the Republic about the role of the PSP and GNR in border control.
In a statement, the Foreigners and Borders Service Investigation and Inspection Career Union (SCIF / SEF) demands that Eduardo Cabrita be “fired immediately Minister of Internal Administration for having lied ”, this Wednesday, in the Assembly of the Republic, when he affirmed that the GNR and the PSP were doing border control.
For the union, Cabrita’s “lies” and, “above all the intention to extinguish the SEF”, are motivated to “avoid his own dismissal”.
“Never having a minister in office has done so much harm to the security of a country, border control and the prestige of the Portuguese State as the flight forward that Eduardo Cabrita has been making since November”, said the president from SCIF / SEF, Acácio Pereira.
The union leader considers that the government wants to extinguish the SEF “just to hide the fact that he did nothing in the eight months that followed ”the death of the Ukrainian citizen at the SEF facilities at Lisbon Airport.
“SEF and the country are paying Eduardo Cabrita’s bill for not doing anything, absolutely nothing, for eight months to correct SEF’s lack of investment after the death of the Ukrainian citizen at Lisbon airport in March 2020.”
The union also stresses that “the red line was passed this Wednesday, in the parliamentary committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, when the minister said that the PSP and GNR were currently doing border control.
According to inspectors, GNR and PSP are present as usual at borders, ports and airports with their own functions, but “none of this has to do with border control assured by inspectors of the SEF ”.
“It is a lie that the Public Security Police or the Republican National Guard currently share the competences of controlling air and land borders with the SEF”, stated Acácio Pereira, stressing that “this is an exclusive competence of the SEF, falling to the PSP and GNR cooperate, as they always did ”.
Already before, in statements to TSF radio, the union leader had stated that these statements are false and that the minister “is aware” of this, considering that Eduardo Cabrita “Deliberately lied” to deputies and citizens.
The union representing that security service also draws attention to the way in which the minister, at the same hearing, denied himself and removed any reason for the transfer of police powers from SEF to other police by stating that SEF “ has been linked to the best public response in recent months ”.
“Eduardo Cabrita is today a minister adrift who in the same morning praises the SEF and says that he wants to end it ”, maintains the same official.
