The Telangana government has started the exercise to keep the promise given in the GHMC elections. The government hopes to supply free electricity to salons, dhobi ghats and laundries across the state within 100 units every month. During the GHMC elections, CM KCR promised to supply free electricity to saloons, dhobi ghats and laundry shops from last December.
Power distribution companies conducted field level survey and collected details as per the directions of CM KCR. Drycleaning shops and laundries that use machines such as AC salons, spas and washing machines are exempt. The survey found that up to 85 per cent of the remaining saloons, laundries and dhobi ghats consume less than 100 units of electricity per month.
The survey revealed that there are less than 900 dhobi ghats and laundries in the state which do not use any machinery. Together, they are paying electricity bills of less than Rs 30 lakh per month. According to discs, non-AC saloons, laundries and Dhobi Ghats are getting electricity bills of up to Rs 14.4 crore a year. The discs included these details in a recent report sent to CM KCR on free power supply to saloons, laundries and dhobi ghats.
Eighty-five per cent of non-AC saloons, laundries and dhobi ghats consume less than 100 units of electricity, the report said. A total of 12,000 electricity connections, including salons, laundries and dhobi ghats, were reported to have been identified for free power supply. The government will have to subsidize Rs 15 crore a year to discs to supply 100 units of free electricity to consumers in these categories.
Officials said the decision on the proposals is likely to be made in a review to be conducted by the CM KCR soon with the CMDs of the power companies, officials said. It is learned that the CM is likely to look into the issue of waiver of electricity bills paid since last December.
