Shriram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik alleged that Valentine’s Day was a Western culture in the name of trying to attract youth. He said February 14 would be Valentine’s Day as Mother’s Day. He said they would recruit volunteers to curb indecent activities taking place in various parts of Karnataka, especially in the name of Valentine’s Day Celebrations. “Every year we celebrate this day as Mother’s Day across the state. We consider it as a day to honor parents,” he said. There are 60 to 70 such events in Karnataka.
Pramod Muthalik said his members would be on the lookout for pubs, bars, ice cream parlors and parks. He, however, explained that they would not take the law into their own hands and would cooperate with the police to thwart obscene activities. However, Bangalore police said they would see to it that no one took the law into their own hands. It is noteworthy that on Valentine’s Day 2009, Sriram Sena volunteers attacked a young man and a young woman dancing in a pub in Mangalore. Sena members accused them of corrupting Indian culture. In 2018, police arrested Pramod Muthalik in connection with a similar incident.
