A manifesto, signed by 196 political figures from various parties, calls for the immediate dismissal of Pablo Iglesias. The vice president of the Spanish government is accused of “not believing in democratic dignity” and of being “an arsonist”.
“If your resignation does not occur, the electoral cost that the Socialist Party can suffer will be the lowest [dos problemas]. We should be more concerned with the precedent of bringing a person to the government whose only known virtue is demagogy and whose only vocation is the facade, ”reads the statement quoted by the Spanish newspaper El Mundo.
“Spanish democracy cannot allow the presence of an arsonist in the Council of Ministers. In the light of history, the responsibility of the person who appointed him will remain ”, write the signatories of the manifesto.
Iglesias is also accused of having achieved “no achievements” or “commendable efforts” as vice president of the government.
Among the signatories to the manifesto are former socialist leaders Joaquín Leguina, who was president of the Community of Madrid, and Nicolás Redondo Terreros, former party leader in the Basque Country.
Even in August last year, the political opposition called for the resignation of Pablo Iglesias. May leaders, as well as the party itself, are accused of unfair administration e embezzlement, following a complaint lodged by the former Vamos lawyer, José Manuel Calvente.
