US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has arrived in Reykjavik, Iceland to attend the Arctic Council Ministerial.
According to the State Department, Blinken will meet with Icelandic President Gadni Johansson and Prime Minister Catherine Jacobsdottir to discuss “US-Iceland priorities on climate change, human rights, bilateral cooperation and the Arctic”.
On Wednesday, Blinken will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov at the ministerial. The meeting will be held amid tense relations between the United States and Russia. The Lavrov-Blinken meeting will be a sort of preparatory process in June for a possible joint summit of President Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin.
The State Department says the meeting between Blinken and Lavrov is a chance to discuss “a more predictable relationship with Russia” and “work on mutual interests.”
