Driver drove his car over one of the barricades at Congressional headquarters, running over two security agents; crime motivation is still being investigated
O Capitol From USA, in Washington D.C., was the target of an attack this Friday, 2. At a press conference, the Capitol Police clarified that the suspect ran his car against the north barricade of Congressional headquarters, running over two policemen. Afterwards, the driver left the vehicle carrying a knife, which he used to injure one of the agents. At that moment, the officers were forced to intervene and ended up shooting the perpetrator. The three main people involved in the attack – the suspect and the two police officers run over – were taken to different hospitals to receive medical attention. The American press claims, however, that both the perpetrator of the shot and the stabbed agent did not resist and ended up dying.
Local security officials said the investigation into the case is still in its early stages and that they are not authorized to reveal details about the suspect, whose motivation remains unknown. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman added that these have been “difficult times” for her and her colleagues, probably referring to the January 6 invasion of Congress. On the occasion, supporters of Donald Trump interrupted the session that would formalize the victory of Joe Biden in the presidential elections. The incident caused the death of five people and led to the impeachment process against Trump, from which he was acquitted. The security of the complex has been strengthened since then, but it remains to be seen whether the attack on Friday, 2, is politically motivated.
A White House confirmed that Joe Biden was not in Washington DC at the time of the incident. As Congress is in recess because of Easter, the Democrat left the US capital in the morning for Camp David, a military base and country house for the presidents of the United States. Although the holiday contributed to a minor movement in the Capitol, some employees were in the building when the suspect advanced over the northern barricade. For this reason, the police blocked all access to the complex and prevented people from entering or leaving the site until the situation was controlled. At the moment, the police say there is no more risk and that is why the Capitol has been reopened.
