At least six people died after heavy rains hit the Zona da Mata and the Alto Caparaó region of Minas Gerais on Sunday, 21. After hours of operation in the city of Santa Maria de Itabira, the firemen found on the morning of Monday 22, the body of a five-year-old boy buried in his own home. In addition to the child, three other people who were in the residence died and had their bodies rescued. In total, six people died in the region as a result of burials and floods. “The team is carrying out, together with the other bodies, the situation analysis and will give all the necessary support to the city”, said the State Civil Defense in an official note.

The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, went to the municipality of just over 10,000 inhabitants to talk to residents and check out the situation in the city. “State helicopters were deployed to assist with rescue work. A humanitarian aid truck with mattresses and hygiene kits has also left for the municipality. Our solidarity with everyone who has been suffering from the rains in Minas. The State will support all city halls and the population that need help ”, he said in a publication on the networks.
Throughout the day, the Civil Defense issued alerts for severe thunderstorms, lightning, hail and heavy rain to more than 20 cities in the state. The agency’s teams remain on alert. So far, there is no exact estimate of how much it rained in the region.
