China’s President Xi Jinping officially declared on Thursday that the country had completed the “arduous task” of eradicating extreme poverty, pointing out that 98.99 million people have come out of that condition in the past eight years.
“Today, we solemnly declare complete success in the fight against poverty in the country,” said Xi, at a ceremony at the Grand People’s Palace in Beijing, before thousands of members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The president pointed out that “regional poverty problems have been solved”, so China ended its “arduous task of eradicating extreme poverty, generating another incredible miracle”.
The official also indicated that 832 villages and 128,000 cities were removed from the list of impoverished sites, according to “current standards”.
Xi Jinping pointed out that the goal was reached in 2021, the centenary year of the founding of the CCP.
Since China launched the reform and opening-up program in the late 1970s, nearly 800 million people have stepped out of poverty, thereby contributing to around 70% in reducing extreme poverty worldwide, during that period.
In 2012, China set a goal eradicate extreme poverty by 2020, 10 years before the date set by the United Nations for the Millennium Development Goals.
Elderly rural residents received cash donations and the government launched schemes to foster job creation for those who depended on subsistence agriculture, including through the formation of agricultural cooperatives or the opening of factories. THE investment in infrastructure and housing it also allowed entire communities to be removed from isolation.
About three million PCC employees were sent to rural areas to work on the campaign to eradicate extreme poverty.
According to Xi Jinping, the eradication of extreme poverty was possible with a “realistic and pragmatic approach” and thanks to “political advantages of the socialist system, which can gather the necessary resources to accomplish big tasks ”.
China invested the equivalent of about 202 billion euros, in the last eight years, in the fight against poverty, said Xi.
This is not the first time that the Chinese president has announced the eradication of poverty in his country. As early as last November, China declared that extreme poverty was eliminated across the country.
In 2019, China set the extreme poverty line at 4,000 yuan a year, which represents $ 1.3 a day. The World Bank sets the threshold at 1.5 euros.
