Mauro Ribeiro says that the entity has no legal mandate to determine which drugs can be used by the Brazilian population
The President of the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), Mauro Ribeiro, criticized, on Thursday, 25, the Brazilian Medical Association (WITH) after the entity recommends the “banning” of the drugs that make up the so-called “kit-covid“. In a letter released on Tuesday, 23, AMB reaffirms that chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, ivermectina e azithromycin have no proven scientific efficacy in the treatment or prevention of Covid-19 at any stage of the disease. Ribeiro disagrees with the position and affirms that the entity does not have the legality to make recommendations of this type. “We are the largest entity in Brazilian medicine. It is the largest medical regulatory body in the world. Our responsibility is immense, ”he said in an interview with Morning newspaper. “When the Brazilian Medical Association comes out with that document, it has all the respect of the CFM, but there is no doubt that it tries to advance on legal issues, because who has a legal assignment in Brazil, to determine what can be used, or not , in the Brazilian population, is the CFM. When they give an opinion on a subject, it is an opinion, a positioning, but doctors do not have to follow what they are advising ”, he said.
Then, the CFM president explained that the institution is guided by Science, but that, as it is a new disease, Science cannot yet guarantee whether measures such as lockdown are really efficient and declare whether the early treatment has no effect on Covid-19. “Where is the great contribution of Science? In the development of vaccines and in the treatment of critically ill patients. The use of anticoagulants, the use of corticosteroids, the chronic position, late intubation, we have made progress. As for the initial stage of the disease, no matter how much people say that there is a consensus in the literature regarding lockdown, it does not exist. There are no studies that prove that the lockdown has a better effect than the protection of the vulnerable, the use of masks and social distance ”, he explained. “Regarding early treatment, what we question is this story that it is established in the literature that early treatment has no effect against Covid-19 in the initial phase. This argument is not true. There are studies that show the benefit of these medications in the initial phase of the disease, but there are also others that do not, ”said Ribeiro, who says that CFM has a legal obligation to analyze all the literature that comes out in the world about the disease.
‘We cannot look for culprits’
For Mauro Ribeiro, the situation of Covid-19 in Brazil is a tragedy. “It is not a catastrophic speech. In 1,500 years of existence, we have never experienced a health crisis of this dimension ”, he pointed out. “The big problem we have is the politicization around the pandemic. This pandemic does not kill in Brazil, it kills in the world. But, unfortunately, here in Brazil there is an insistence on the part of society and by the media to look for culprits. ” The president of the Federal Council of Medicine says there are no culprits. Not even the president Jair Bolsonaro, nor the ministers who were in charge of the Ministry of Health, nor the governor of São Paulo, João Doria, nor the mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas. He defended the union between the entities and stated that the only way out at the moment is mass vaccination.
“The only way out at the moment, the most plausible, is vaccination. And the Federal Council of Medicine strongly supports a mass vaccination program in Brazil. And this program is going to happen, because there is a lot to be praised by the government and by Minister Eduardo Pazuello, who left the ministry under very heavy criticism ”, he said. “The criticisms are valid, we criticize ourselves a lot, both the ministry and the president, but we don’t look for culprits. We seek to contribute to governments within our legal competences ”, he explained. According to Ribeiro, for this reason the CFM is classified as a purse holder and a denier. “Simply because CFM seeks to analyze what happens in the world and what happens in Brazil. We try to refer those responsible and give suggestions that can help the Brazilian population to overcome this terrible adversary that we have today ”, he justified. “We have no precedent in history. The only thing that happened like that was the Spanish flu, more than 100 years ago. It is the first time in the history of Brazil that we have come across an enemy as strong as Covid-19 ”, he concluded.
