The wife of Mexican drug trafficker “El Chapo” Guzman, leader of the Sinaloa cartel detained in the United States, was also arrested today by US authorities at an airport in the state of Virginia, the Justice Department announced.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, who has dual American and Mexican nationality, was detained at Dulles International Airport and is expected to appear before a federal judge on Tuesday, facing charges related to drug trafficking.
The charges include conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana in the United States, but also to actively participate in Guzman’s escape from a Mexican prison in 2015 and to plan a second rescue for her husband, until he was extradited in January 2017 at the request of US authorities .
Guzman was tried and convicted in 2019 in the United States and is serving a life sentence.
According to US prosecutors, Emma Coronel Aispuro was one of the brains of the celebrated escape of 2015, which involved the construction of a 1.6-kilometer illuminated tunnel, in which a motorbike was installed on rails, until the cell shower. of Guzman.
In order to do the excavation and prepare for the escape, land near the prison was bought, in addition to an armored car.
Inside the prison, Guzman was also equipped with a GPS watch which allowed his companions abroad to know exactly his position within the prison, so that the tunnel was as close as possible to the escaped.
A witness, collaborating with the American authorities, was, along with the wife and children of the Mexican drug baron, another of the planners for the escape from the Altiplano jail, at a time when extradition to the United States was being prepared.
