Guillermo Lasso will play against Andrés Arauz on April 11
After two weeks of recounts and controversies in the elections of the Ecuador, the candidate Guillermo Lasso will run the second round against Andres Arauz. After the polls were completed, the numbers showed that Arauz, a leftist candidate sponsored by former President Rafael Correa, had 32.7% of the vote. Guilherme Lasso, center-right, secured second place by receiving 19.74%. Third was the indigenous leader Yaku perez, with 19.38%.
Lasso celebrated the victory and said that democracy triumphed. The indigenous leader claimed fraud to keep him out of the dispute and promised to go to court. Pérez’s party claims that the announcement was made before the recount ended in several provinces. A demonstration against the result was called for Tuesday, 23. The successor to Lenin Moreno should take over in May and find a country in trouble. The second round is scheduled for April 11.
