According to information from the Fire Department, there is no record of victims so far
A fire hits the Cinemateca Brasileira warehouse, in Vila Leopoldina, in the west of São Paulo, on the afternoon of Thursday, 29. According to information from the Fire Department, at least 11 vehicles are involved in the occurrence, recorded at around 18:00. No casualties were reported. So far, there is no confirmation on which areas of the property were affected. The building is not the main headquarters of the Cinemateca, but it houses film rolls, the Programadora Brasil collection and museum teams. In April of this year, employees of the agency signed a manifesto in which they warned about “the risks that run by the collection, equipment, databases and building of the institution”. “The possibility of self-combustion of cellulose nitrate films, and the consequent risk of fire, often receive more attention from the media and the public. The institution faced four fires in its 74 years, the last in 2016, with the destruction of about 500 works. The risk of a new fire is real”, they wrote.
