A list of about 30 fruits and vegetables subject to change has been published. Fruits that are sold cut as well as a limited number of delicate fruits and vegetables can still be sold in plastic containers for now, but will be phased out by the end of June 2026.
“We use an absurd amount of disposable plastic in our daily life. The circular economy law aims to reduce the use of disposable plastic and encourage its replacement by other reusable and recyclable materials or packaging”, said the Ministry of the Environment.
It is estimated that 37% of all fruits and vegetables sold in France are currently sold with plastic packaging.
The packaging ban is part of a government program to eliminate plastic. In 2021, France banned plastic straws, cups and cutlery, as well as travel Styrofoam boxes.
